INEC Assures Credible By-Elections in Bayelsa
The acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Air Vice Marshal Ahmed Muazu retired, has assured Bayelsans of a free, fair and credible by-election that would be acceptable by all come December 5th.
He gave the assurance in Yenagoa, during a stakeholder meeting with various groups including security operatives.
He said the essence of the visit was to assess the readiness of the Commission ahead of the polls, pointing out that the training of NYSC members was part of INEC's preparation to ensure a successful rescheduled senatorial bye-election.
National Commissioner in charge of Edo, Bayelsa and Rivers State Mrs May Agbamuche, said the feat recorded in Edo and Ondo governorship elections has shown that they were ready to conduct a violence-free election in the two senatorial districts with innovation.
On the eligibility of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the INEC National Commissioner, Information and Voters' Education Festus Okoye, explained that INEC obeyed a federal High Court order restraining the candidate from taking part in the election as enshrined in the 1999 constitution.
State Commissioner of PoliceĀ Mike Okoli assured voters and staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC of their safety before, during and after the elections, while the State chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council IPAC, Mr Victor Fisi, urged the commissioner to ensure that the elections are free and fair.
The Acting INEC Chairman Air Vice-Marshal Ahmed Muazu retired and his entourage had earlier visited Saint Jude Girls Secondary School Amarata where the training of NYSC members as an ad-hoc staff was ongoing.
