Reps Sets IP Committee to Investigate Killings in Benue State

The House of Representatives has resolved to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the persistent killings and crises that have plagued Benue State over the last 15 years. The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance by Hon. Dickson Tarkighir, who decried the June 14, 2025, attack on Yelwata community, which left many dead, thousands displaced, and properties destroyed.
He warned that continued inaction could escalate violence and worsen the humanitarian crisis. The House urged NEMA, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and other agencies to provide urgent relief to affected communities.
It also mandated its Committees on Interior, National Security, and Human Rights to assess the situation, recommend action, and investigate the killings to ensure justice for victims.
In a related development, the House declared the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat in Ogun State vacant, following the January 2025 death of its representative, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga. INEC is expected to conduct a by-election to fill the position.
