2015 Election: NYSC/ INEC Restrategize Over Security Of Corps Members
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), Brigadier General Johnson Olawunmi has called on state and local governments to cooperate with corps members deployed for the purposes of election next month.
The call is coming barely two weeks to the general election.
General Olawunmi, who made the call during a meeting with the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, said it is only when conducive environment is provided that corps members will discharge their duties without fear of molestation.
He said election security committee set up by NYSC authorities was to safeguard movement of Ad-hoc staff and sensitive materials for the election.
The DG further stated that although the corps members applied voluntarily to work as electoral officers yet more need to be done by INEC and other stakeholders to ensure their security as NYSC alone he said, cannot bear consequences of their participation in the polls.
INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega assured the visiting DG of the commission’s resolve to provide a conducive environment to reduce number of death of corps members working as electoral officers during next month’s polls.
