Rivers Assembly Declares Pro-Fubara Lawmakers’ Seats Vacant

Rivers assembly has declared pro-Fubara lawmakers seat vacant, and has decided to write to the independent National electoral commission (INEC) to conduct elections for the vacant seats within 90 days. The decision was agreed during a plenary session, led by speaker of the house, Martin Amaewhule.

The Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule has declared the seats of Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and three other pro-Fubara lawmakers vacant following their absence from sittings for 152 days.

The declaration followed a motion by the leader of the house major jack when presenting the Appeal Court judgement which affirmed the Speakership of Martin Amaewhule.

The affected members are Edison Ehie, currently Chief of Staff Government House; Victor Oko-Jumbo, current factional speaker of the Assembly; Adolphus Timothy and Sokari Goodboy .

The house also agreed to give Governor Fubara another opportunity to present the 2024 Appropriations Bill following the nullification by the Appeal Court of the N800bn bill, which he had presented to a parallel House led by Edison Ehie. With this move the Assembly is strengthening its position and it remains to be seen how the governor and his loyalists will respond .
