10 Doctors Test Positive to Coronavirus in Kano

Ten Medical doctors have tested positive to the dreaded COVID-19 while treating patients at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH.

The chairman Association of Resident Doctors, AKTH branch DR. Abubakar Nagoma, confirmed this in a statement in Kano.

He said the doctors got infected while treating patients who came to the hospital with symptoms which turned out to be COVID-19.

He said there are resident and consultant doctors who tested positive to COVID-19 in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital adding that eight of them are in Isolation center while the remaining two are in self-isolation in their homes because they do not have any symptoms.

He said more results are expected during the week because almost 100 health workers of the hospitals have submitted samples to test for the virus.

He attributed the vulnerability of the doctors to the failures of patients to put on a face mask when coming to the hospital and lack of Protective Personal Equipment for doctors’ safety.

According to the doctor, another challenge is the deliberate hiding of information related to COVID-19 by some patients, which exposed many doctors and other health workers to the diseases.

He said they have threatened to stop diagnosing patients if they are not provided with protective equipment by the AKTH management.

He, however, said that the management of the hospital is also complaining that it is yet to be supplied with protective equipment by the federal government.

Beside these doctors, Galaxy TV news reported last month that six members of the Kano state Task Force on COVID-19 tested positive to the virus and are currently in Isolation Center, prominent among them are co-chairman and secretary of the committee.

On Monday the NCDC announced 23 new cases in Kano, making the total confirmed cases of COVID-19 cases in the state to stand at 365 with eight deaths.
