Cyber crimes: EFCC, FBI collaborate

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC says it has extended further its collaborative operation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI of the United States, as part of measures to intensify the clampdown on cybercriminals commonly known as Yahoo-yahoo among others.


Galaxy’s Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that anti-graft agency which gave a hint on this Tuesday noted that the first leg of the collaboration known as “Operation Rewired” led to the recovery of the sum of 169,800 Dollars from internet fraudsters during the three weeks that the operation lasted.

Spokesperson of the anti-graft agency, Wilson Uwujaren, said the EFCC secures convictions for cybercriminals almost weekly.

The EFCC spokesperson said owing to the relative prevalence of cybercrimes in the south of the country compared to the north, the larger percentage of arrests has been from that part of the country.

The recent publication by the FBI of a list of Nigerians as suspected cybercriminals on its watch list recently drew the attention of people on the enormity of the crime in the country and the negative global attention it is currently attracting.
