Insecurity: Southwest Speakers Charge Governors to Procure Helicopters, Drones for Surveillance
Speakers of the six states Houses of Assembly in the Southwest States have called on the six Governors in the region to jointly procure at least three security helicopters and drones for the purpose of aerial surveillance of the region.
They also called for an urgent security summit to be facilitated by the Governors in view of the security challenges facing the region.
The Speakers and Majority Leaders of the states Houses of Assembly in the Southwest States under the auspices of Conference of Speakers of Southwest States Legislatures made the call as part of resolutions reached at a meeting held over the weekend in Ibadan.
The meeting was attended by the speakers and majority leaders from the Southwest States.
The Chairman, Conference of Speakers of Southwest States Legislatures, Bamidele Oleyelogun, who is also the Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, chaired the meeting.
The conference also advised the governors to empower the forest rangers in the states to embark on aggressive patrol of the forest areas while also giving the needed legislative backings to allow the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun Corps) to be strengthened to give room for the recruitment of able-bodied unemployed youths.
They also called on the Federal Government to take more proactive steps to urgently restore peace to the troubled spots as well as the entire country.
In the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the forum said it has become imperative for Government to should mete out appropriate sanctions and send strong warning to people behind the various dastardly acts.
The forum advocated that the Governors of the Southwest States should come together to procure drones and at least three helicopters for the aerial surveillance of the entire region.
