Women in Nigeria have demanded greater inclusion in leadership positions in the country. 

The call was made by a member of the federal house of representatives, Wumi Ogunlola is Ijero Ekiti.

As participation of women in elective positions continues to reduce in Nigeria, as recorded in the 2019 general elections, some members of the House of Representatives have called for greater participation of women in key leadership positions in the country. 

Recent statistics revealed that women participation in parliament has regressed from 5.6 percent before the 2019 general elections to 4 percent after the election which is said to be below standard for a country like Nigeria. 

The member representing Ekiti Central Federal Constituency Two in the House of Representatives, Wumi Ogunlola speaking at Forum in Ijero-Ekiti, stressed the need for more women’s participation in peace and security, women’s political representation and leadership, women’s economic empowerment and social investment. 

Other members of the House of Representatives, James Owolabi from Ifako-Ijaiye Federal Constituency, Lagos State agreed that low representation in prominent positions in government is worrisome, in spite of the vital roles they play during elections.
