Speaker Abbas Laments Delay In Payment of Stipends
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has lamented the reported delay in scholarship stipend payments to Nigerian students studying locally and abroad, warning that such setbacks undermine their education and motivation.
Represented by Hon David Agada at the investigative hearing, he assured that the 10th Assembly is committed to strengthening administrative systems to ensure timely disbursement of funds and to improve future operations of scholarship programmes. The probe is being conducted by the House Committee on Students Loans, Scholarships and Higher Education Financing.
Chairman of the committee, Hon Ifeoluwa Ehindero described the situation as a failure of administration and a threat to the welfare of Nigerian students abroad. He said the committee will determine the causes of the delays, verify the status of released funds, and ensure accountability to prevent a recurrence.
Parents under the Forum of Parents and Guardians of FGN Bilateral Education Agreement Scholarship Recipients, represented by Chairman Prince Ponfa Wuyep , said the scholarship terms have been breached and that scholars abroad have not received stipends for the 2025 fiscal year, with outstanding shortfalls from 2023–2024.
