Protesters Disrupt NASS Members Oversight Functions in Bayelsa

The people of Biseni clan in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, have staged a peaceful protest, barricading the only access road leading to a facility belonging to Nigeria Agip Oil company in their community, where members of the Nigerian House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on Oil Spill cleanup and remediation in oil-producing states were carrying out their oversight functions.

The Community women and youths say over the years they have been neglected by the federal, state government and Oil producing companies operating in their kingdom, by denying them basic amenities that have caused them significant destitution.

The Pere of Biseni Kingdom, His Royal Majesty King Akani, and other Protesters say there is no basic social amenities in the community as well as jobs for their youths hence the barricade, as the stranded House of Representatives members were unable to access the facilities.

The Spokesman and youth leader of the community Comrade Warder Benjamin lament the environmental degradation as a result of the oil spill in the community.

He appealed to the national assembly Members to ensure that companies are responsible for their actions.

Our correspondent reports that the National Assembly Members having visited some sites in Bayelsa state, promised to continue with the oversight function despite the setback as a result of the protest.
